The Toltec Rattler Redux: “Over 50 Years Ago*” on America’s Longest and Highest Scenic Railroad
We hit the way back machine to 2022 which itself takes us back to 1972 to take a ride on the Toltec Rattler (Redux)... Time is a big ball of wibbly wobbly timey wimiy stuff...
Anyways, We're on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, America's Longest and Highest steam tourist railroad. The C&TS straddles the line in discord and rhyme because it's hungry like the wolf.... No, no wait, that's a Duran Duran song.
I'm sorry... The C&TS sits on the Colorado and New Mexico border and is jointly owned by the two states as a joint operation between the two. The Cumbres rolls between the Yard Limit at Chama, New Mexico, and the Yard Limits of Antonito, Colorado.
The railroad took over the abandoned section of the San Juan Extention of the former Denver and Rio Grande Western in 1970, and in 1972 ran its first photographer's freight train, the Toltec Rattler. The Rattler (not named for the Diamondback Rattlesnake, but the rattling sound of the empty cars as the train went down the tracks) roared up the west side of Cumbres Pass with K-36s 483 and 484 that took a motley assemblage of freight cars to Big Horn and return.
Today we look back at the Toltec Rattler Redux, the Cumbres and Toltec's homage to this original train. The train is shortened to allow the 484 to handle it alone as the 483 has long been sidelined for other locomotives such as the now oil-burning 489. We see behind the locomotive a reefer madness, sorry, just a refrigerator car just like the original had. Drop Bottom and High Side Gondolas and boxcars and caboose make the rest of our train.
So while there's no distant signal because the narrow gauge here was never signaled, you can't be delayed in block (delay in block ?), and there never were any commuter trains here, so you can't be a Coaster Fan on these rails.

Join me as we venture further along The Oregon Trail (actually, the end of it, as Tillamook overshoots it) as we end our 2022 jaunt without the pitfalls of the journey such as having to ford the river in our wagon, or hunger, or well, you get the idea if you ever have played the game on your Apple II in school. We're in Lebanon Oregon on the Santiam Excursion Train, the d.b.a. tourist arm of th...

Hey, it's May 4th? I could make some "May the Fourth be with you" pun for Star Wars day or something... but arent I more of a Star Trek nerd? (shots fired). Anyways, speaking of shots fired, I'm probably gonna hear it that just because USA Today keeps ranking the Durango and Silverton as America's Most Scenic Railroad... That it's somehow not... But with views like this, you be the judge. On th...

We head to the East Coast (yes, anything east of Big Bend National Park in my book is 'The East Coast', I don't care, y'all have too much water and too many trees, might as well be another planet...) and find ourselves in Texas for the Great Solar Eclipse of 2024 and what would a Big Diehl vacation be without a train trip. We find ourselves riding the rails of the Texas State Railroad (not line...

You definitely got better footage than me! That was a great day, and I'm glad I got to meet you!
Excellent video again, keep them coming dude!
excellent video, thank you
Glad you liked it!
Nice!
Thanks!
I enjoyed watching this. When this trip happened, I looked up a lot of videos and pictures as I thought "Wow, I'd loved to have riden that!" - I think it was just the inclusion of the long reefer car that made extra interest for me 😂 Excellent as always. I appreciate your efforts a great Diehl 😉👍
Great video and sounds of steam. Thanks for no music!
Great,🎥👍👍👍❤️🚂
looks like a model railroad from this angle
Is this from the Christ of the Mines memorial?
Yes!
Well, the road up to it.
@@Big_Diehl Ah ok. Looked awfully familiar. Just recently finished shooting a feature on the D&S and walked up there during some free time. Beautiful area.
It makes me super happy that we have Rio Grande's Southern 20 back up and running. She's been my most favorite and most loved narrow gauge locomotives since I saw pictures in old books of the narrow gauge rail lines in Colorado I hope in the future she'll get to come back to the Cumbress and Toltec again in the future, but most of all, I would love to see her visit the Durango in Silverton. It'll be the closest she's ever been to returning to home rails of the rgs.
🎥👍👍👍👍👍👍👍🚂❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Do these cabooses have working restrooms on them?
Not this model.
#4014 handles the Arizona heat with ease
Well, it was October
Love getting Smacked up in the morning! Godsmack rules
I was part of the Friday crew on 205 and 5399, think I have seen all the coverage of the Lerro charter, this is the best. I didnt make it there haven been beat up by the #3 and #25 the few days before. BTW I played Oregon Trail on a apple ][ not a ][+ or a //e
Thanks! I had some problems with the external recording device and I sat on the footage for an unknown reason. Got sidetracked, etc. Glad you enjoyed it!
Hey William !! Thanks !! Did you checkout Train Mountain RR In Chiloquin, Or.. while you were out there ??👍👍👍👍👍
No! I found it was closed when I went through, as I had stayed with family in Yreka, so I swung through Crater Lake on the way to Bend. Unfortunately afterwards, I got a text from some acquaintances made during the Victorian Iron Horse Round Up inviting me out there for a private get together that had been going on, but I was already past!
Awesome song choice
You do such great work, Diehl. Please keep it up!
Thanks, will do!
The exhaust stack seems to have a little whistle to its note? Great video Big Diehl! The outtakes were fun
As pointed out in another comment, there’s no nozzle installed when this was shot, hence the noise.
Nice video. Like me
🎥👍👍👍👍❤️🚂🚂🚂🚂
This video is beyond beautiful.
Thanks! I love the look of the anamorphic lens, and I’d love to get some to try in Colorado. The problem is using primes and only getting the single shots
Just awsome
Apple IIe, Oregon, old cars and trains? Sweet. How does one find out about these runs?
In our case, we subscribe to Lerro Prodction’s newsletter.
That single chime sounded hideous. Was it one of 463’s whistles?
I love how they made a special tender with the Polar Express written on it 🤣
They put a vinyl overlay on it every season.
0:53 You're telling me that your friend is a world-famous movie producer. That's awesome.
That’s the joke, yes… 🤣
Babe wake up the underrated Big Deihl posted
The stack talk on this one sounds really weird. I wonder what the issue was.
Someone on Hyce’s discord theorized it may be a misaligned blast nozzle. Sounds legit to me.
@@Big_Diehl Nozzle was missing from 205, I loaned George the nozzle from SMV 21, to use as a pattern. SMV100 nozzle was gone too. Recently cast fresh ones for 21 & 100
Thanks @@martinadams7949 !

1:10 oh my... the local Amtrak crew know who you are! :) I guess I need to start listening to a VHF radio the next time I am there :P Those T2 semaphores are strong! Let's hope they continue to perform for many years to come!
“Well, Of Course I Know Him. He's Me”-Obi Wan Kenobi… Kinda, but close…. 🤣😉
Nice work. Always fun to get a shout out.
Fantastic video of the Santa Fe Trail, the landscape, the Amtrak train and the very beautiful semaphore signals. I wish you a nice week and best wishes from Germany.
Legit shout out?

The lady jumping in the beginning! All worth it
Love that place, stop every time we go north, Thanks!
I’ll miss that railroad that once connected between banks and Tillamook. I wished that Tillamook had many railroads
Another great video! Thanks
Thanks for watching! I was worried no one liked this one!
@@Big_Diehl your videos feel genuine and not scripted.
I love the sound

Great to hear!
Great Video!🎥👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks! It’s literally a grab video and completely unplanned…. All on the phone.
Nice job, but I would have liked shots of the inside of the caboose also.
How does it make you feel knowing you didn’t get shots from inside the caboose?
What the doghouse doin?
Do you mean why it’s there and explained in the video?
@@Big_Diehl no it’s a meme, called "what the dog doin?"
@@LMR78 yup, elder millennial here… whoosh…
Two diesels for 7 passenger cars? I'm missing something?
Mountain grades
Headed for Raton Pass, America’s steepest active mainline railroad is ahead.
Too bad the 2926 can’t run on the Buckingham Branch’s old C&O main line. It would be interesting to compare and contrast that locomotive with the 611, maybe have them double head. Maybe have the two engines against each other in a pulling contest.
It’s better to have 2926 stay out west. Having a Santa Fe locomotive in Virginia doesn’t seem right.
